I was asked to write a short piece about Avatar Vehicles to go into the next Newsletter of Queensferry Ambition which I have now done. They are working hard to promote the new BID (Business Improvement District) which is a Government initiative to improve the all round business community within the BID area. For us, this is a great organisation to help us to get introduced to the other local South Queensferry businesses – especially since we are fairly new to the area, having moved up from the Borders only last summer.

It got me to thinking about how difficult it can be sometimes to blow your own trumpet! Well, some people find it more difficult than others I know – we all know some of them I’m sure! Anyway, I wrote the article and tried to be as informative as possible about what we do without being a) Boring! b) too ‘salesy’ – it was an article and not a sales pitch.

Anyway, it has been submitted now and, Diane who is project manager for QA, seems very happy with it! I shall post it on here once it is all done and dusted – don’t want to steal my own thunder now do I!

I emphasised in the article how important it was for local businesses to work together and share one another’s services. Once I have found a good service provider I do tend to stick with them – whether it be a builder, a computer repair company – or in our line of work a great finance company, leasing company or Car Dealership. From a service provider’s perspective we, at Avatar, strive to offer a friendly and professional service to our clients – we enjoy meeting new clients all of the time and then make it our business to ensure they become long lasting relationships. If our name is the first, or only one, that pops into people’s heads when they are thinking about anything to do with cars, vans or leasing, then we have done our job well.

I was asked the other day how often you should get your car serviced by someone and when I asked when they had last had theirs done they said ‘Never!’ I was horrified! The poor car is 6 years old or so, they bought it 2nd hand some 4 years ago and have never done anything to it except to MOT it. The engine oil and filters must be so dirty and hardly lubricating the engine at all – it’s like holding a dirty cloth over your nose and breathing through it and then putting bits of grit into your eye and blinking!! Not pleasant at all for the engine that is trying so hard to keep going!

I would always recommend getting your car properly serviced every year as a minimum. If it is a fairly new car I would recommend using a franchised Dealer for the make of car that you have – this ensures that any manufacturer’s warranty is kept valid and also keeps the value of the car slightly higher when you come to sell it. As the car becomes older this becomes less relevant and you can use a non franchised garage – but try to get a recommendation from someone as to where to go, as opposed to finding one from Yellow Pages or similar.

It can be annoying when you are investigating something on the internet and you come across the jargon of the industry / profession that you are looking into. It is often terminology that they use within their industry each and every day and can be so ‘normal’ for them that they forget that outsiders, and customers, have not come across it before.

The most obvious one in the Car Leasing industry is probably where this term, or something similar, is written: 3+35 Months – have a look on our website and you will see what I mean! Just to clarify, this means that it is a 3 year deal with a payment profile of: an advance payment equivalent to 3 of the rentals followed by 35 monthly payments. (ie if the monthly rental is £200 then the initial payment will be £600)

There are different deals on offer all of the time – sometimes it can be for a shorter period – ie 3+23 is a nice short 2 year deal, still with the initial payment being 3 of the monthly rentals. Or you could go for a slightly larger initial payment to bring down your subsequent monthly costs if that suited you better – ie 6+35 which would be 6 payments in advance followed by 35 months.

With Contract Hire or Leasing the initial payment (or deposit) is non refundable and is part of the overall amount that you pay. You typically pay this just before you take receipt of the car and the monthly payments start one month after this date.

The customer has let us do all of the quoting and has been able to get on with their work and life in general, while we have taken all of the hassle, time and strain out of the purchases and the administration. Finding ways to keep your motoring costs down should come into play before you even buy a new car.

When you are in the process of selecting a new car from the thousands of models out there one of the major factors will be the initial outlay, but also the day-to-day running costs.

So, one of the first conundrums will be whether you opt for a diesel or petrol model. Ordinarily diesels are cheaper to run because they give you better fuel economy. For example a basic 1.6 diesel Ford Focus has an official combined fuel consumption of 67.3mpg whereas the equivalent petrol model returns 47.9mpg. This should a be no-brainer surely? Go for the diesel.

However, petrol models tend to be cheaper to buy. The petrol Focus will set you back £15,880 but the diesel will cost you £17,095 – a £1,215 premium.

So, you need to know how long it would take you and how many miles you need to travel to make it worth shelling out the extra for the diesel model. You also have to factor in the pricier cost of diesel fuel too.

The arithmetic, therefore, can be tortuous, so help is hand with Parker’s Cost of Motoring tool, which lists all the cost of nearly all the new cars on the market. With a few clicks on a drop-down menu you can find out how much your annual or even monthly fuel will be. You can even compare models, so you can find out whether it’s the diesel or petrol model that makes the most financial sense.
